BIRMINGHAM:  You’ll need to make different plans if you were going to ride the train to New Orleans.  Amtrak has suspended service on the “Crescent” through at least September 4th.  Service affected is south of Atlanta, including Birmingham, to New Orleans.  The rail line says no alternate transportation will be provided.

Amtrak says the disruption is due to a contract agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  The agreement allows the federal government to use Amtrak equipment in New Orleans to assist in an evacuation.

Riders with tickets already booked for the affected time period can call 800-USA-RAIL, or click here to visit Amtrak’s web site for more information and status updates.
