    The Veterans Administration has awarded
a $1.3 million contract to the Birmingham firm Civil Consultants
Inc. to prepare construction documents for the veterans cemetery in
Montevallo.

The secretary of Veterans Affairs, James Peake, says the
contract brings the VA closer to making the cemetery a reality.

The design project is scheduled for completion this winter.
Peake says it will lead to developing 60 acres at Montevallo.

The new National Cemetery was dedicated Sunday, July 13th in Montevallo.
The new cemetery is the third such cemetary in Alabama.

The site has been nicknamed, “The Arlington of the South.” It’s in addition to two other National Cemeteries in the state, one in Seale and another in Mobile.

The cemetery’s 479 acres will initially have room for about 11,000 grave sites.  The site will include a public information center and be equipped with an electronic gravesite locator.
