JEFFERSON COUNTY: The County has defaulted on an $83 million sewer debt payment that was due at 5pm today.

Commission President Bettye Fine Collins is scheduled to meet with a federal judge Friday to discuss the county’s next move.  Because of the default, creditors can now demand payment on the county’s existing $3.2 billion debt.  At today’s County Commission meeting, there was no mention of the debt or the deadline.

As of now, the Jefferson County Commission has not taken action toward filing bankrupcty.
