Birmingham’s 55th homicide victim was killed before 9 Thursday night in the 4100 block of 39th Avenue. In Bessemer, he’s remembered as a hero.

Demetrius Reigns coached the McAdory Yellow Jackets little league football team. They are a group of five and six-year olds with a lot of heart in the Bessemer community.

‘The First 48’ crews, along with Birmingham police, documented Reigns’ murder.

“He was all about family—if it was his own family or his football family, he was building a house in the community he really just loved the kids,“ said Reigns’ friend, Jason Hudgins.

Dozens of families prayed and paid respects to the man who spent several days a week coaching football and giving back to the community.  As police search for the coach’s killer, Yellow Jacket parents are figuring out a way to explain death to their five-year-olds.
