The Day Ahead-July 23, 2008:
-Funeral services will be held Wednesday for Gardendale High School’s senior class president, Katie Burkett. 17-year-old Burkett was killed Sunday morning on I-65 in Calera. Burkett was a passenger in a car of teens heading for the beach. The funeral starts at 11 a.m. at Gardendale First Baptist.
-truth®, the largest national smoking prevention campaign for youth skateboarding and the legendary Tony Hawk along with the world’s best skaters, BMX riders, and Freestyle Moto-Xers and thousands of local teens are teaming up with the Vans Warped Tour to bring its distinctive orange “truth® trucks” and dynamic truth® crew members to tour stops across the country. Trucks are rigged with DJ decks, video monitors and more, in order to help spread information about tobacco products, and give teens the knowledge needed to make informed choices about smoking.
The truth® campaign will be stopping at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Pelham on Wednesday, July 23 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
-The Greater Birmingham Auburn Club, joined by Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville and former Auburn quarterbacks will surprise Aubie with a party to celebrate his 30th birthday at the annual Fall Kick-Off Party Wed., July 23, at the McWane Science Center, 200 19th Street North, downtown Birmingham. The longtime family-friendly event begins at 6:30 p.m., doors will open at 6 p.m.
Admission is payable at the door at $5 for GBAC members; $10 for non-members. Be sure to bring your Tiger cubs because children 12 and under are FREE! Membership is available at the event to take advantage of the reduced admission price.
