PICKENS COUNTY, Ala.—Floodwaters have taken the lives of a woman and child in Pickens County.

Officials said that Crystal Vaughn, 27, of Gordo, and Malachi Vaughn, 18 months, died Tuesday 6 miles northeast of Reform, when torrential rains caused flooding on Buncomb Creek near Antioch Church Road.

Officials aren’t exactly sure how part of Antioch Church Road collapsed.

Crystal’s black Chevy Suburban SUV floated several hundred yards downstream. By the time rescuers arrived, the vehicle was almost completely submerged.

Crystal Vaughn’s vehicle is pictured in the foreground of this photo, taken by NBC 13 HD reporter Jon Paepcke. Flood victims in the other car are reported to have survived.
