SHOAL CREEK, Ala. (AP) - Jorge Fernandez Valdes, a 15-year-old
from Argentina, extended his lead to six strokes today in the
before play was called for bad weather at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Valdes birdied the first hole to move to 8-under par before play
was suspended in mid-afternoon with thunderstorms in the area, and
the round was called more than two hours later. The second round of
stroke play will resume at 8 a.m. central time tomorrow.
Valdes leads six players who are tied at 2-under in the
156-player field. Only three members of that second-place group
finished their round: Cameron Peck, of Olympia, Washington, shot a
1-over 73; Justin Shin of Canada was 2-under for the day and Sam
Smith of Turlock, California, shot par.
Seth Reeves, of Duluth, Georgia, Pat Rodgers of Avon, Indiana,
defending champion Cory Whitsett of Houston and Cody Gribble of
Dallas all had their rounds suspended when they were 2-under.
The top 64 18-and-under golfers advance to match play after two
rounds of 18-hole stroke play.
