These days you can’t protect yourself enough from computer scams or identity theft. It’s happening to more and more people, but you can take steps to keep yourself from becoming a victim.

Do not respond to unsolicited requests. If you did not initiate an e-mail or phone call, do not provide personal or financial information to anyone or any company.

Review accounts regularly. Check your statements regularly to ensure all charges are correct. The same holds true for Online Banking — check regularly for any suspicious activity.

Memorize numbers and passwords. Do not carry your Social Security card in your wallet or purse. Do not record your SS# or ATM or CheckCard PIN on papers you carry with you. When you write checks to pay your credit card accounts, never put the whole account number on the check, just the last four digits.

Protect your computer from viruses. Protect your personal information stored on your computer. Use complex passwords containing at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess. Use firewall, virus and spyware protection software that you update regularly.

Shred your personal information. Shred or tear up documents that contain personal information. Shred credit card offers that you don’t accept.

The Federal Trade Commission and The American Bankers Association also have information on privacy and consumer tips on preventing identity theft and managing credit.
