Bettina Boateng - Weekend Anchor and Reporter/ Fill-in Weathercaster

"She's a really nice gal, but how do you say her last name?"

This is usually the way people start a conversation about Bettina Boateng.

Not to worry, it's pronounced "Boat-Ten." Well at least that's the way everyone says it in the states and Bettina likes it. Originally from Ghana, West Africa, Bettina grew up in the "Bayou City," Houston, Texas.

New to the Magic City, Bettina joined NBC 13 HD News in August of 2007. She can be seen weekend mornings as the anchor of NBC 13's "Today in Alabama: Weekend Edition" and her various reports on the Birmingham Metro area can be seen on the station's various newscasts. With a strong passion for science, nature and the atmosphere; when she's not covering the news Bettina can also been seen in the weather center! Bettina is currently a broadcast meteorology student at Mississippi State University and she enjoys working with the NBC 13 HD Weather team as a fill-in forecaster all while working toward becoming a full-fledged meteorologist.

Bettina comes to Birmingham from the NBC affiliate in Charleston, S.C. where she spent 3 ½ years uncovering stories and informing the community about local schools as the as a fill-in anchor and education reporter.

Bettina is no stranger to the South and other parts of the world. She's worked in Texas with ABC News Radio and CBS 11 in Dallas, as well as CNN Politics and FOX 5 News in Atlanta. She has also traveled to film news documentaries about education and culture in Ghana, West Africa, and reported on injured military personnel recuperating at the Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany.

Bettina graduated from Southern Methodist University's Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas. She earned a degree in Convergence Journalism with an Emphasis in Broadcast News. Bettina has also won reporting awards from the Associated Press and South Carolina Broadcaster's Association. Most recently, she was awarded an AP award for her one-hour documentary "The Lowcountry to Africa: The Ghana Connection."

Bettina loves to mentor and actively support local schools by volunteering her time to read to younger students like Ms. Holly's class at Hemphill Elementary. She also loves to spend time sharing with older students about careers and actively "Thinking Big" and working to make a difference in the community through service. A proud member of Birmingham's Rotaract Club, during her spare time you can find Bettina in the community, volunteering, visiting museums, painting, listening to jazz and faith filled tunes and of course, chatting it up with folks in the area.
